“Mining Melrose” is a series that uncovers the historical experiences of Black and Brown communities in the city of Melrose. During Black History Month, the Melrose Historical Society highlighted the stories of Black individuals who helped shape the town’s past. After reading these accounts, I approached the writer and asked if I could use their work as the foundation for a new body of art. The resulting collection, built on collage, assemblage, and painting, weaves together the personal histories of prominent community figures of color, offering a visual narrative that honors their contributions and lived experiences.
